Selling items on Ebay

Ebay launched in the States in 1995 it then didn’t launch in the UK until 1999, four years later. It is designed to allow people to sell their items online through an auction based bidding system, although it also offers the functionality to do a Buy it Now trade.

It is usually the seller’s responsibility to post the item that has sold unless otherwise stated on the advert. The buyer will state what postage method they intend to use and often charge the buyer for the postage. You can usually choose to dispatch your parcel via Ebay Paylink, Royal Mail or choose another courier service such as Hermes.

Ebay let you do some listings for free and they will take 10 percent of the sale price as their fee. Beaware that they also take ten percent of the postage fee so you need to add that on to the cost when working out your postage prices.

It is very important that you post your items quickly in order to get good feedback. This can have a big impact on whether buyers will buy off you. You will often be responsible for the item until it arrives, so items that are valuable, should be sent recorded or signed for so they can be tracked.
